Sent letters to Ann<\/a> & C.F.<\/a><\/p>\n

Promising finer \u2015 half a gleam of sun. \u2015 But at 2 pouring rain, & black November weather again.<\/p>\n

Macbeans<\/a>. \u2015 Did not work.<\/p>\n

Bought things for Ann & others.<\/p>\n

Wrote to Ann, & letter from her. \u2015<\/p>\n

Went to Dessoulavy<\/a> \u2015 & certainly did puchiss photograffs, Lizards, mosaics &c. &c.
\nCalled on Macbeans also \u2015 & sate with clever Mrs. M. & Mrs. Gordon<\/a>. \u2015\u2015 Rain always \u2015 clearer before sunset & a small walk\u00a0 on the Pincian. Saw a [Bopie] \u2015 whom I suppose was Maria B.: \u2015 they were all very kind to me in those days. \u2015 And, as I turned into the Corso, there was Cavaliere Ricci<\/a> \u2015 of those kind Aquila Abruzzi days! \u2015<\/p>\n

There\u2019s something in this world amiss<\/p>\n

Will be unriddled bye & bye.<\/p>\n

And I did not speak to him: nor do I think it possible he could have known me. \u2015 And I also thought I saw Monsignore Coletti<\/a> \u2015\u2015\u2015\u2015\u2015.<\/p>\n

At 4 P.M. a card was brought me \u2015 \u201cMr. Empson<\/a>\u201d & \u201cMrs. Charles Empson\u201d written thereon. I thought it was the remaining brother of the Professor \u2015 but it turned out an old gent, of snowy & meek-like look \u2015 \u201ca distant relative Sir.\u201d \u2015 He had come so far to see W.S. Landor<\/a>, & had letters to Browning<\/a>, \u2015 & knew \u201cPentland.\u201d By degrees it came to me that there was a C. Empson senior: Newcastle \u2015 who also went to Bath after a certain time: \u2015 & I can\u2019t but think this the man. He was about 40 when I was a lad of 17: & may be 70 now. \u2015\u2015 Hum. \u2015\u2015 He called afterwards again, \u2015 asking G.<\/a> where he could dine? \u2015 G. said \u2015 \u201cIn qualunque sito \u2015\u201d\u00a0 but finding he did not understand Italian \u2015 added, \u2015 \u201cEverywhere Sir, \u2015 all over the place! \u2015 [Vide overleaf 29 April]<\/p>\n

G. in the evening told me this story \u2015 told him by a Greek of \u02c7[Ianina] who was on board the boat from Corfu to Brindisi. Being at Tricala\u00a0 \u2015 a place aboundly in storx, this man \u02c7[& others] saw \u2015 sitting in a garden \u2015 a large snake go up a tree to a storks nest: the 2 old storx made no end of clatter & by that means drew by degrees a cloud of storx \u2015 all the storx of the Peneus \u2015 who flew, & clattered, but didn\u2019t touch the snake. At length some flew away, & returned with more \u2015 2 large or older particularly: & these fell on the snake & struck him down \u2015 whereon all the storx rushed at the abolished serpent, & tore him into pezzi,\u00a0 & were happy ever after.<\/p>\n
