It is the name of one of Corfu’s most distinguished families. Sir Demétius Kourkouméli, head of the family during Lear’s sojurn on the island and his first landlord there, was Regent of Corfu in 1864. Lear often visited the family at their country house at Afra (Lear 1988, 239).
