Exceedingly cold. Rose at 8. ― deep snow still on S. Deca, & on Salvador, as far down as Spartilla. Westminster Review & Illustrated News after 9. Worked at Lord Headfort’s little drawing. ― Cold! At 1 or 2 Colonel & Mrs. Ormsby came; & afterwards fidgety little Stuart, & then cheerful & good Shakespeares: how English & beautiful she is. Worked again till 4½ ― then walked the usual round, but it was very very very cold. Yet I went as far as the “pier” end. Dined alone. The Illustrated News of the 16th came ― so took a longish time to read. Indian news, & Neapolitan. ― Bed by 10: going to the “Princesses’ ball” is out of the question, but I wish they would not ask me to dinner as often.
