As usual, perfectly lovely. Was ever such a summer seen? ― (yet people “grumble” at the heat.) Rose at 5½ & wrote journal & Greek, & letters, to Col. Leake ― & Brandling.

Breakfast ― & walking in the garden. ― I did not go to church, for church here is simply intolerable, if there is no absolute duty to oblige one to do so.

Lunch ― & garden: & a walk with B. Hunt, & John Senior ― to “Bible bottom” & other parts of the lovely downs: return by 5½ ―

Dinner at 6. The evening not quite so pleasant; still, very much so. ― There are no truly kind & good peoples [sic] as one can ever have known
