This was the first of Lear's picture stories to be published in book form; it appeared about 1938.

I have scanned the pictures from a set of not-very-good photocopies I made a few years ago, so the quality is rather low; on the other hand, the quality of the reproductions in the book itself is very uneven and probably reflects the state of Lear's drawings.

I have not included the 'coloured frontispice' and have inserted the trascriptions of Lear's comments (modified to reflect Lear's lineation, punctuation and capitalization) between the pictures. Page references are indicated in the introductions and notes between {}, each of the pictures takes a page in the original publication.
